Issues / Discernment Counseling

Decide with clarity.

When one of you is leaning out and the other is leaning in, traditional couples therapy can feel like pressure. Discernment Counseling is a short, structured process to help you arrive at a decision you can both trust.

Two people gently holding hands in warm window light

Most couples therapy quietly assumes both partners want to stay and work on the relationship. When that isn't true — when one of you is genuinely unsure, or already partly out the door — couples therapy can backfire. It puts the leaning-out partner under pressure they aren't ready for, and the leaning-in partner ends up performing hope they can barely feel.

Discernment Counseling is different. It is not couples therapy. It is a deliberate, time-limited process — typically 1 to 5 sessions — to help you make one decision, well: stay as-is, separate, or commit to six months of all-in repair work. You don't have to figure it out alone. And you don't have to commit to anything before you're ready.

The reality

If any of this sounds familiar...

One of you isn't sure you want to stay.

The other isn't ready to let go.

You're stuck — and the not-knowing is its own kind of pain.

You want to make a decision you won't regret in five years.

Why this happens

It isn't because you're broken.

Mixed agendas

When partners want different outcomes, traditional couples therapy can stall before it starts.

Crisis fatigue

Long stretches of uncertainty exhaust both nervous systems and make every conversation higher-stakes than it should be.

Unfinished stories

It's hard to choose forward when old wounds haven't been named, and harder still to choose backward when there's still love.

Decision avoidance

Staying in limbo can feel safer than the grief of either choice — until it doesn't.

You don't have to keep doing this alone.

How therapy helps

What actually changes in the room.

  • A short, focused process — typically 1 to 5 sessions, one decision at a time.
  • Each partner is seen individually and together so both voices are protected.
  • You explore three paths honestly: status quo, separation, or a six-month all-in commitment to therapy.
  • The leaning-out partner is not pushed to commit. The leaning-in partner is not pushed to let go.
  • You leave with a direction — not just more questions.

Our approach

Evidence-based, relationship-centered.

Erica draws from a range of frameworks and tailors the work to what you actually need — never a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Primary approach

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Our primary lens. EFT looks beneath the surface fight to the attachment fears underneath — and rebuilds emotional safety from the ground up.

What success looks like

Not better communication. Something deeper.

Common questions

Things people often ask.

Couples therapy assumes you both want to work on the relationship. Discernment Counseling is for couples where one partner is unsure. It's shorter (usually 1–5 sessions), more structured, and aimed at one outcome: a clear decision about the direction of the relationship.
